Prius Plug-in Hybrid (Prius PHV)
We are very pleased to announce the introduction of the most advanced
Prius yet, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. It will be the smartest advancement in automotive
technology available.
What Is a Prius Plug-In?
The Prius Plug-in is similar in concept to the Prius hybrid. Both are powered by Toyota’s gas-electric Hybrid
Synergy Drive. However, the two vehicles employ different battery packs.
Prius hybrid uses a nickel-metal hydride battery pack that can
propel the vehicle solely on electric power for just one mile
at 25 mph or less. It is recharged by the gas engine, which
provides the majority of the vehicle’s driving power.
By contrast, Prius Plug-in comes equipped with a larger, highercapacity
lithium-ion battery pack that, under certain conditions,
has the power to operate the vehicle in EV Mode at nearfreeway
speeds for a maximum distance of about 10 to15 miles.
Once this battery pack is discharged, Prius Plug-in changes to
hybrid mode. This battery pack can also be charged by plugging
the vehicle into a 110v outlet for 3 hours or a 220v outlet for 1.5
hours. In short, Prius Plug-in can use all-electric power for many
short trips or hybrid power for longer trips.
